A Direct Line from Farm to Cup

We believe that ethical sourcing is the foundation of exceptional coffee. Discover our commitment to the people and places behind every bean – a promise of direct relationships and sustainable practices.

Direct Trade vs. Fair Trade: What's Our Approach?

Our Direct Trade Model

  • Relationship-based. We personally know our farmers.
  • Price set by quality, not commodity market. We pay significant premiums.
  • Complete traceability to a specific farm or washing station.
  • Empowers sustainable agricultural practices through direct partnership.

The Fair Trade Model

  • Certification-based. Often deals with larger cooperatives.
  • Guarantees a minimum price, acting as a safety net.
  • Traceability is often to a regional level, less specific.
  • Focuses on collective wellbeing and social development projects.

At Betty Louise Gossler, we champion a direct model because it fosters closer partnerships, rewards exceptional quality, and creates a more sustainable future for specialty coffee farmers and their communities. We believe this hands-on approach delivers unparalleled quality and positive impact.

Meet Our Partners: The Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union

The Story of Sidama Ardi Washed

In the misty, fertile mountains of the Sidama region of Ethiopia, roughly 1,800 to 2,200 meters above sea level, the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union works tirelessly to produce some of the world's finest heirloom varietal coffee. Established in 2001, this union represents 53 primary cooperatives and over 70,000 small-scale farmers.

By paying them an average of 35% above the commodity price – significantly higher than average fair trade premiums – we directly support their community's health clinics and educational programs, ensuring brighter futures for generations of coffee growers.

"This partnership with Betty Louise Gossler means stability for our families and investment in our land. It’s more than just a buyer; it's a true friend."
